New Chandeliers

New Chandeliers

As the saying goes, many hands make for light work. Or, is it that many hands make lights work? Both are true about the most recent project completed at St. Nicholas Church in Barberton. What began as a wishful thought for pastor Fr. Miron Kerul’-Kmec four years ago became a reality this past January. When members of the church’s Altar Society approached him and asked what they could donate to enhance the parish’s worship experience, he was quick to recall an item he had seen in the 2010 Vlandis Co. catalog. In the catalogue, he showed them a chandelier that would not only provide better lighting in the church, but would add to the presence of holiness with its multitude of icons. Once word spread that the Altar Society would be facilitating the purchase of a new large chandelier, parishioners Nick and Burdeen Mackay and Michael Scala each offered to donate for a medium size chandelier that would complement the large one. That only left the need for a donor to replace the old light in the choir loft. Quickly, the church choir stepped up to take care of this expense. With Gene Ruckman volunteering to cover the import and duty fees and other expenses of that type, the path was clear to ask Bishop John for final approval. In April, our order was placed with the Vlandis Bros. Co. of Athens, Greece. The chandeliers were shipped from Greece on June 21. With excitement and anticipation running high, there were no less than 20 people waiting at the church when the chandelier crates arrived at our doors on Weds. July 16. As the crates were unpacked, everyone pitched in to help carry the multitude of parts in to the church. Until late Wednesday evening, and Thursday as well, parishioners from young to old volunteered their time to help assemble, wire, and prepare the chandeliers for installation. The services of the Novatny Electric co. were secured to remove the existing chandeliers, as well as to hang the new ones. By the grace of God, all four chandeliers were in place and ready to light for the Divine Liturgy on that Sunday of July 20. Awe and amazement are truly the best words to describe the immediate feelings one felt upon entering the church, and seeing them in place for the first time. Each light has a chandelier hanging in the middle, adorned with icons and circled by a choros, or ring of icons. With the “cloud of witnesses” icons circling the church, joined now by the icon adorned chandeliers, one cannot help but appreciate the sense of being immersed in the presence of holiness. Truly our church home is an oasis, where one can find the refreshment and respite that only comes from faith and trust in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
