St. Nicholas Day 2012 and St. Nicholas Awards

St. Nicholas Day 2012 and St. Nicholas Awards

Celebration of the patronal feast for Saint Nicholas parish in Barberton, which took place on Sunday, Dec. 2, carried a special meaning this year.  In years past, we were joined by members of neighboring St. Michael's church.  What changed for this year is that the congregation of St. Nicholas had the opportunity to welcome the parishioners of the now former church of St. Michaels, not as guests, but as new, or potential members of our parish family.

The main dish provided by the church, was supplemented by a variety of casseroles and side dishes brought by those in attendance.  Before and after the meal, while awaiting the arrival of Saint Nicholas, the children had fun making a Christmas tree ornament to take home.

Once St. Nicholas arrived, the children lined up to visit with him, and received a gift bag of treats in return.  More than 30 children were able to participate in the festivities.

In keeping with the spirit of generosity so pronounced in the life of St. Nicholas, the almost 100 year  church in Barberton, which bears his name, has entered into a third phase of development.  The original European founders built in downtown Barberton, the first house of worship dedicated to the patronage of St. Nicholas.  Fifty years later, on the east side of town, the second generation of the original founders bought 40 acres of land and built a new house of worship.  Now almost 50 years later, the third generation has risen to the challenge presented by our pastor at our parish meeting on Oct. 7, to once again create anew.  This time however, the intent is not a brick and mortar physical structure, but a symbolic building. This is a building up of the means to ensure the financial stability of the parish which will serve to carry us into our second century of serving as a house of God, and the perpetuation of our Byzantine Catholic expression of faith.

At the Divine Liturgy, ten parishioners, who have already become founders by donating at least $1000, some even more, were recognized for keeping the tradition of the love of God, and generosity of St. Nicholas, ever present in his church.

This ambitious endeavor is expected to culminate with the celebration of the platinum jubilee in the year 2016.
