2nd Sunday of the Great Fast - St. Gregory Palamas

The second Sunday of the Great Lent is dedicated to one of the greatest theological minds in the Eastern Church - St. Gregory Palamas. He was a great defender and confessor of our Holy Faith. He fought those who attempted to distort Orthodox doctrine. St. Gregory Palamas was the spokesman and defender of the concept of unceasing prayer and the uncreated Light.

To those who would think that Sunday of Orthodoxy services are simply a nice time for processions and a period of spectacular we offer our sincerest condolences. An Orthodoxy which only proclaims her historic heritage and external beauty is a museum-piece Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy to be vital and alive must be aware of the various heresies still rampant in the world today and be able to openly and courageously fight and condemn such heresies.

Our Theology is important because it reflects the truth and sweetness of our Saviour. Our Theology is important for without it, we would not have the map for our heavenward journey. Our Theology is important because true knowledge of God brings us to an awareness of one-ness with God. False theology (heresy) leads away from God; leads on a false path; deceives us and unites us with Satan. Orthodoxy from its establishment by our Saviour has always insisted on a true confession of faith. In the Divine Liturgy we pray that our bishops will always "preach the word of Truth." Finally, we must bear in mind that Christ is Truth and His Church is Truth. If we are afraid of the exactness and strictness which following Christ's truths imposes on us, then we must look elsewhere for another type of Orthodoxy, one which will be superficial and make no demands upon us. It is sad to say there is that type of "Orthodoxy" available. May we never be heirs and partakers of it.
