The Fathers on Faith:

Faith is the proof of what cannot be seen. What is seen gives knowledge, not faith.

St. Gregory the Great

We are not justified through ourselves or through our own wisdom or understanding or piety, or through actions done in holiness of heart, but through faith, for it is through faith that Almighty God has justified all men that have been from the beginning of time.

St. Clement of Rome

Not only in actions but in faith also has God preserved man's free and unconstrained choice. He says, "Let it happen to you according to your faith," thus showing that faith is something which a man has as his own, just as he has his own power of decision.

St. Irenaeus

This is what the eyes of faith can do. The eyes of the body can see only those things which come under their perception, but the eyes of faith are quite the opposite. For they see nothing of visible things, but the invisible things they see as if they were lying before their eyes. This is faith: to see the invisible as if it were visible. St. Paul says: “Now faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that are not seen.”

St. John Chrysostom

Faith comes from the disposition of the soul, but dialectic comes from the skill of those who construct it. Therefore for those in whom the action of faith is present, the demonstration through arguments is unnecessary, or even useless. What we perceive through faith you attempt to establish by arguments, and often you cannot even express that which we see, so it is clear that insight through faith is better and more secure that your sophistic conclusions.
