The angels inquired of Mary [Magdalene]: "Woman why are you weeping?" And she said to them: "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him" (Jn. 20:1 3). Notice that the account tells us that the woman did not say "they have taken away the body of my Lord '," but "they have taken away my Lord." "Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus." Because she both loved and doubted, she saw and did not recognize Him, showed Him her love while hiding her doubt.    & #160;   &# 160;

Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, "Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away (Jn. 20:1 5). But how is it that, without telling Him for whom she was looking, and seeing Him whom she took for the gardener, she said: "Sir, if you have carried Him away? The force of love often brings it about that we cannot believe that anyone does not know the one on whom our thoughts are always fixed. And so this woman does not say for whom she is looking, but says: "If you have carried Him away." For she cannot imagine that the person she mourns with ceaseless desire can be unknown to anyone else, Jesus said to her, "Mary" (Jn. 20:16). It is as though our Lord clearly said: I do not know you in some general way, like everyone else, but specially. And so, because she is called "Mary" by name, she recognizes her maker and at once calls him "Rabboni", that is "Teacher." For He it was who was outwardly sought and He who was inwardly teaching her to look for Him.
